Kemi Badenoch Claims Nigel Farage's Reform UK Is 'Another Left-Wing Party'
Kemi Badenoch and Nigel FarageKemi Badenoch just bizarrely described Nigel Farage’s Reform UK as “another left-wing party”.The populist movement has become a rival right-wing opponent to the Conservatives over the last year. While leading in the opinion polls – the Tories are currently trailing in fourth place – Reform clinched a staggering 677 council seats in the English local elections last month and won the Runcorn and Helsby by-election.Though it just lost this week’s crunch Scottish by-election in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse to Labour, Reform came in third place and the Tories came in fourth with an abysmal 6% of the vote. But Badenoch brushed off concerns her party is being replaced by Reform on the right at a press conference today. When a reporter asked for her response to Labour’s claims that Reform are now their main opposition, she replied: “I laugh when they say that because I know it’s nonsense.“They would love to have Reform as their main challenger, they would love that. Reform is another left-wing party. They are arguing for the same things – nationalisation, the two-child benefit cap.”Reform have been courting left-wing voters by promising to boost the welfare state and nationalise Thames Water and British Steel. However, Reform is anti-immigration and Farage is known for aligning himself with Donald Trump’s vision of the American right-wing Republican Party.Badenoch continued: “They [Labour] would love to have a political fight like that. I don’t pay attention to what they say, I pay attention to what they do.”However, she also suggested voters are turning from Keir Starmer’s party to “protest parties like Reform” because of how “badly Labour is doing”.“Reform is not a serious political party,” Badenoch claimed. She called the Conservatives the “economically credible party” who Labour “don’t want to face”.She added: “Labour is going to be facing the Conservative Party at the next election and we’re going to get them out.”Another journalist then pointed out to Badenoch that voters appear to be listening to her shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick and Farage, but “they don’t really seem to be listening to you.”Badenoch said she disagreed, adding: “Simply shouting out announcements is not serious, that’s not a plan.”“Going on TV and making noise is not governing,” she claimed. “And quite frankly, I’m tired of hearing politicians make promises that they don’t know how to deliver. That is not my style.”The Conservative leader dismissed fears over the Tories’ abysmal performance in the Scottish by-election too.She said Larkhall is “not the place where the Conservative Party fightback starts”.“We live in a very competitive political environment, and we have made it very clear that the situation has changed, and we have to be different. “And that is what my job is right now, to change the Conservative Party,” Badenoch added.A Reform source told HuffPost UK: “Kalamity Kemi should focus on her battle for third in the polls with the Lib Dem’s.“Maybe then the general public might recognise her.”5News: Labour say they're not so bothered about the Tories, as they regard Reform as the real opposition... how does that make you feel?
