Laura Kuenssberg Calls Out Top Tory After He Refuses To Apologise For Liz Truss's Mini-Budget
Chris Philp and Laura KuenssbergChris Philp was cornered by the BBC’sLaura Kuenssberg for refusing to say sorry over the chaos Liz Truss’s government caused with her mini-Budget.Philp, now the shadow home secretary, was a top minister in the Treasury at the time of the former PM’s doomed plan to cut taxes by £45bn in autumn 2022.Mortgage rates soared, the pound plummeted in value and the Bank of England had to make an emergency intervention to steady the economy. Now in opposition, the Conservatives are finally trying to distance themselves from this major hiccup.Shadow chancellor Mel Stride even made a speech this week promising the Tories would “never allow that to happen again”, and claiming the Conservatives are still the party of fiscal responsibility. But, during an interview with Philp on her show Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the presenter pointed that Stride stopped short of actually apologising.Kuenssberg said: “He couldn’t quite say sorry. You were chief secretary [to the Treasury] at the time, will you say sorry for what happened?”Philp replied: “I think Mel openly and honestly acknowledged that mistakes were made, and what Mel was saying was that those mistakes will never be made again by a Conservative administration.“Of course, we do see some parties today making extravagant promises about massive tax cuts and increases in welfare which are completely unfunded, and could cause a repeat of what happened. But those mistakes will never be caused by a Conservative government.”Kuenssberg asked again if he wanted to apologise twice more, adding: “Isn’t this precisely the thing that drives people bananas about politics?“Your colleague makes a speech in London, expressing contrition – which is a fancy way of saying we got it wrong, we’re sorry – will you say sorry to people for the Liz Truss implosion?”Philp repeated his previous answer, to which Kuenssberg said: “As a human being, if you make a mistake, and you just say, ‘yes we messed up’ – don’t you just say sorry?”“We’ve been really clear, I don’t know how many more times to say it, it was a mistake, we got it wrong, and those mistakes will never be made again,” Philp said. The Conservative MP also told Sky News that he opposed the mini-Budget behind the scenes.“I opposed the way that it was constructed – I was arguing for spending restraint,” Philp said.“Those warnings were sadly not listened to. Obviously, I was bound by collective responsibility, as you know.”That’s the duty that binds all ministers to publicly agree with the government’s decision.A Labour spokesperson said: “Chris Philp’s refusal to apologise for the misery inflicted by the Liz Truss mini-Budget shows that the Tories haven’t listened and they haven’t learned.“Kemi Badenoch and her party have spent the last six months making billions of pounds of unfunded spending commitments which would send mortgages and bills soaring again. This Labour government is fixing the Tories’ economic mess.”Related...'Cack-Handed': Laura Kuenssberg Slams Labour's U-Turn Over Winter Fuel PaymentsChris Philp Has Criticised Liz Truss's Mini-Budget And People Are Making The Same PointTop Tory Launches Attack On Liz Truss – But There's Just 1 Problem
