Leaked Transcript Shows Why Trump's Peace Plan Had Russian Fingerprints All Over It

Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, right, shake hands during their meeting in Moscow, Russia, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025.Donald Trump’s special envoy told a senior Kremlin adviser how to win over the White House with its peace deal, according to a damning new call transcript.Bloomberg News revealed on Tuesday that Steve Witkoff told Yuri Ushakov on October 14 that he should call the US president to congratulate him for the Gaza peace deal, make Russia’s support for it clear, and declare Trump a man of peace.According to the transcript, Trump’s envoy said: “From that, it’s going to be a really good call.”Witkoff even urged the Russian adviser to tell Putin “Steve and Yuri discussed a very similar 20-point plan to peace and that could be something that we think might move the needle a little bit, we’re open to those sorts of things.”He also came up with the idea for a Trump-Putin call before Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House in October – something which ended up happening a day before the Ukrainian president’s trip. The revelation has stunned much of the west, as it comes after the US’s new peace proposals for Ukraine were criticised for being exceptionally favourable towards Russia’s war aims. The original 28-point plan included demands for Ukraine to cede even more territory to its aggressor, cap its armed forces and give up its ambitions of joining Nato. After European allies presented a series of counterproposals meant to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty, the US media reported on Tuesday that Kyiv had agreed to the core principles of the Trump deal. The US president also announced that his proposal to end the war had been “fine-tuned” and that Witkoff was going to meet with Putin in Moscow this week. The White House did not question the accuracy of Bloomberg’s reports around Witkoff’s call with Putin’s foreign policy adviser.Instead, the president said his special envoy’s approach was “standard” negotiating practice, telling reporters: “He’s got to sell this to Ukraine. He’s got to sell Ukraine to Russia.“That’s what a dealmaker does.”Witkoff – previously seen as a more pro-Ukraine voice within the Trump administration – is reportedly stepping back from the administration in January. But US representative Don Bacon, a Republican, called for Witkoff to be “fired” now, writing on social media: “He cannot be trusted to lead these negotiations. Would a Russian paid agent do less than he?”The White House communications director Steve Cheung said: “This story proves one thing: Special Envoy Witkoff talks to officials in both Russia and Ukraine nearly every day to achieve peace, which is exactly why President Trump appointed him to do.”Another Putin adviser, Kirill Dmitriev, said the transcripts were “fake” adding: “The closer we get to peace, the more desperate the warmongers become.”US secretary of state Marco Rubio has repeatedly rejected claims that the 28-point plan was Russia’s “wish list”, insisting it included input from both of the warring parties.Related...American Media Claims US And Ukraine Have Agreed To Draft Of Peace DealEU's Top Diplomat Says Putin Is 'Near Breaking Point' So Trump Must Change Ukraine DealTrump's Peace Deal For Ukraine Is Drawing 2 Deeply Worrying Comparisons
