Madonna Shares That She Was Diagnosed With Sepsis During Health Battle Two Years Ago

Madonna on stage in Brazil last yearMadonna is opening up about a brush with death two years ago.In June 2023, it was announced that the Queen of Pop was receiving treatment in intensive care after developing a “serious bacterial infection”, leading her to postpone the beginning of her Celebration world tour.The Like A Prayer singer has now shared more about her health scare during a wide-ranging interview about her spirituality on the podcast On Purpose With Jay Shetty, sharing for the first time that she was diagnosed with sepsis during that period. “About a year and a half ago I was rehearsing for my tour, and I got a bacterial infection,” she explained. “One minute I was alive and dancing around, and the next minute I was in the ICU of a hospital, and I woke up from being unconscious for four days.“I got out of the hospital, they took me off the ventilator, I started to breathe on my own, and I had something called sepsis, and it can kill you“Everybody recovers [from sepsis] at a different rate and so… I’ve always seen myself as Superwoman, so I was like, ‘oh I’m going to kick this, I’m going to be good, I’m getting back into rehearsals’. And I had no strength, I had no energy, I couldn’t even get out of bed, and I didn’t know when it was going to end.”Madonna shares details of her bacterial infection health scare giving an example of radical acceptance of things pic.twitter.com/LMU4rrWy4K— Madonna Ultimate (@MadonnaUltimate) September 29, 2025She credited advice from her Kabbalah teacher with getting her through this turbulent time, after he told her: “The sooner you accept what’s happening to you and that you don’t know when it’s going to end, the sooner it’s going to end.”Later in the interview, Madonna claimed: “I was almost there, on the other side, and I had a conscious moment – my mother appeared to me and said ‘do you want to come with me?’ And I said no… my assistant heard me say no.“When I woke up, I realised the ‘no’ was about me needing to forgive and make good with people who I still held grudges against.”Madonna’s mother, who was also named Madonna, died when she was five years old, after being diagnosed with breast cancer.After eventually beginning her Celebration Tour in October 2023, Madonna told her fans at one of the first shows: “Less than four months ago, I was in a hospital and I was unconscious, and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it.“It’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now.
