Mark Carney Criticises Keir Starmer's Decision To Give Donald Trump A Second State Visit

Mark Carney and Keir Starmer in No.10 in March.Mark Carney has criticised the UK’s decision to grant Donald Trump a second state visit.In surprise comments, the Canadian prime minister said people in his country “weren’t impressed” by the move.Keir Starmer handed over an invitation from King Charles to Trump when he visited the White House in February.He said the president’s last state visit to the UK six years ago was a “tremendous success”, and said the next one would be “unprecedented” and “truly historic”.It was seen as a way for the Labour government to ingratiate itself with Trump amid attempts to strike a trade deal with America, which was finally signed last week.But speaking to Sky News, Carney said the gesture was not appreciated in his country, given Trump’s repeated threats to take over Canada and make it America’s 51st state.He said: “I’ll be frank, they [Canadians] weren’t impressed by that gesture... given the circumstance. It was at a time when we were being quite clear about the issues around sovereignty.“I was not yet prime minister but I was being clear on the campaign trail and it cut across some of those messages.”Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden this morning defended the Trump state visit as he tried to play down the significance of Carney’s comments.He told Sky News: “We’re very pleased that there’s going to be a second state visit from President Trump. Every country has to decide how it conducts its own relations with other countries.“For us, the United States relationship is really important. It’s a very long friendship. We’ve conducted a very good deal with the United States just last week which has saved thousands of jobs in the UK automotive industry.“We want a positive relationship with the United States, to sell them great products.
