Mike Pence Says This Trump Policy Could Kill The American Dream

Former Vice President Mike Pence sits for an interview with CNN on May 5, 2025.Former Vice President Mike Pence on Monday said keeping toys affordable “really is part of the American dream” as President Donald Trump says US families will simply need to learn to live with less as a result of his trade policy.Trump recently doubled down on his conviction that children should be equally satisfied with fewer, more expensive toys if his tactics result in store shelves going empty.“A young lady, a 10-year-old girl, 9-year-old girl, 15-year-old girl, doesn’t need 37 dolls. She can be very happy with two or three or four or five,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening. “Let’s not waste a lot of time on this stupid question.”But Pence said pursuing policies that could raise prices will not bode well with American families.“Keeping dolls affordable, keeping our kids’ toys affordable, that really is part of the American dream,” Pence told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.Pence also appeared to disagree with a recent statement made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who argued “access to cheap goods is not the essence of the American dream.”“Well, I’m somebody who spent almost my entire life in public service,” Pence said. “We lived on our paycheck, while we raised three kids and put three kids through college. Cheap goods were a big part of it. And I think we ought to be candid about that.”Former VP Pence: "Keeping dolls affordable, keeping our kids’ toys affordable, that really is part of the American dream."Our full interview airs at 9 p.m. ET. pic.twitter.com/cWOQIM7X0b— Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins) May 5, 2025Already, Mattel, the company that makes Barbie dolls, said it would increase prices “where necessary” to make up for higher costs prompted by Trump’s tariffs.Pence raised concerns about Trump’s decision to pursue indiscriminate tariffs on countries across the world, warning that his strategy will not deliver “a win for the American people.”“I do have concerns that with the president’s call for broad-based tariffs against friend and foe alike, that ultimately the administration is advancing policies that are not targeted at countries that have been abusing our trade relationship, but rather are essentially new industrial policy that will result in inflation, that will harm consumers and ultimately harm the American economy,” he said. The former vice president predicted that the public won’t be happy once the impact of this trade policy becomes clear.“I think the American people are going to see the consequences of this,” he said. “I think they’ll demand a different approach. And I think that approach is free trade with free nations. Let’s use the leverage, the threat of tariffs to negotiate down trade barriers with free nations, even while we stand firm with China and others.”Related...Social Media Erupts Over Trump's Dismissal Of Mike WaltzMike White's Savage 3-Word Response To White Lotus Composer 'Feud'Downing Street Hits Back At Trump Tariff Chief's Claim UK Is China's 'Compliant Servant'
