Monster Season 3 Has Set An Unenviable New Record For Netflix
Charlie Hunnam in character as Ed Gein in MonsterThe latest season of Monster has been Netflix’s most-watched show in the UK ever since it began streaming last week. However, despite its viewing figures, The Ed Gein Story also holds a less than impressive record when it comes to the hit true crime anthology series. Each season of Monster focusses on a different murder from history, with past seasons centring around Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menéndez brothers, before this latest iteration, which stars Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein. While seasons one and two both garnered controversy and were met with heavy criticism, reviews aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes indicates that the third run is the least well-reviewed to date. The first and second seasons hold critical scores of 57% and 45%, respectively, while this latest batch of episodes sits at just 20% at the time of writing. It’s a similar story when it comes to audience scores, too, which goes from 82% to 58% and 54% from season to season of Monster.Laurie Metcalf and Charlie Hunnam in Monster: The Ed Gein StoryBoth The Times and The Guardian gave Monster’s third season just one star, with the former claiming it “hits new depths of tastelessness” and the latter lamenting that the show “is utterly devoid of morality”.Instead, the review claims: “It panders to viewers’ basest instincts by lingering gleefully over the worst depredations humanity can commit.”Another review in Time suggests the show has “nothing but contempt for its audience”, accusing it of “layer[ing] hypocrisy as well as sanctimony over the grubby, tedious nihilism that made Dahmer so miserable to watch”.The Hollywood Reporter branded the show “a thematically ambitious mess”, urging readers not to bother watching it at all, while Radio Times insisted that it’s “nowhere near as clever as Ryan Murphy thinks it is”.Meanwhile, a fourth season of Monster is already in the works, with Charlie Hunnam reported to be playing a brand new character in the next batch of episodes, which will feature the show’s first ever female protagonist.READ MORE:Thought The Stars Of Monster Season 3 Looked Familiar?
