Monster Star Charlie Hunnam Reveals His Girlfriend Has 1 Condition For Him Playing Roles Like Ed Gein
Charlie Hunnam in character as Ed Gein, as depicted on the poster for Monster's third seasonCharlie Hunnam has shared how his girlfriend’s advice helped him through his latest role as Ed Gein. The British actor depicts the notorious serial killer in the lead role of Netflix’s latest season of Monster, which has already faced plenty of controversy for its graphic depiction of Gein’s crimes while also becoming the platform’s most-watched show in the UK right now. When asked the very valid question of how one returns to normal life after playing such a heinous character, Charlie admitted he’d begun taking the advice his long-term girlfriend Morgana McNelis when it came to heavier roles.“She got frustrated with me showing up and being a bit of a shell after doing a role,” Charlie told E! News. “So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, ‘Here’s the rules of engagement: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.’ Which is completely fair and really lovely.″[So now] I take a week, at least, however long I need once I finish.”Charlie Hunnam and Morgana McNelis at the premiere of Monster last monthCharlie also shared that after completing work on Monster, he underwent the “most extreme decompression” of his career, which included visiting Gein’s grave.“I drove up and spent the day and visited his grave and spent some time with him, which was a healing way to say goodbye and put a full stop at the end of the thing,” he explained. The former Sons Of Anarchy star previously admitted he worried he’d made a “horrible mistake” taking on the Gein role before production got underway, but has also defended the show against accusation it “sensationalises” its central figure’s real-life crimes, insisting the drama is “a very sincere exploration of the human condition”.Despite – or, perhaps, because of – Monster’s mismatch of negative reviews and enormous viewing figures, Netflix is already busy working on a fourth season, which will feature the show’s first ever female protagonist as it jumps back in time to the 1800s and the story of Lizzie Borden. On top of that, the new season of Monster is reported to see a return for Charlie in a supporting role.READ MORE:Thought The Stars Of Monster Season 3 Looked Familiar?
