My Boiler Was Condemned. This Tiny Heater Works Better Than I Expected
Duux, doing its thing. We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI – prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.“I’m sorry but we’re going to have to switch your boiler off. It’s not safe.”They’re the words nobody wants to hear, especially in October when the mercury’s starting to drop. But that’s exactly what happened at the start of this month when a heating engineer came to service our ancient boiler and determined it wasn’t safe to use.Since then we’ve had various experts out to determine how and where we could install a new boiler, with quotes ranging from A Lot Of Money to Even More Than A Lot.While we’ve tried to figure out the best course of action, the mornings and evenings have been getting noticeably cooler. So, I dusted off my trusty Duux heater – and to say it’s saved my bacon these past few days would be an understatement. We first bought the heater when my youngest was born. She’s a winter baby and the weather was particularly harsh following her rapid arrival. For the first few days of her life we slept downstairs in the living room – then the warmest room in the house – because our bedrooms were a lot cooler. Too cool (in my eyes) for me, let alone a newborn. After a few days of me sleeping on the sofa, her in a Moses basket, I realised it probably wasn’t a sustainable setup so, after scouring reviews, we bought a Duux heater to take the chill off the air in our bedroom – and boy did it do just that. For such a small heater (22cm diameter), it is mighty. If you shut the door to the room you’re in and switch it on, it doesn’t take long for the temperature to rise. We’re talking 10-15 minutes depending on room size. The minimalist heater, which my colleague described as “chic” (and I wouldn’t disagree, it is kinda chic as far as heaters go), has three settings so you can either blast out heat (my personal favourite) or have a slower, constant stream of warmth. Duux can heat a room of up to 30m2 “twice as fast” as traditional heaters, according to its product description – and I’d be inclined to agree. Even in our draughty house, with its high ceilings, the rooms heat up quickly if you keep doors shut. The air outlet also ensures that heat is evenly distributed over 360 degrees. It’s ridiculously easy to use this heater as it only has two buttons on it – there’s also an app you can download to benefit from more features (ie. setting a specific temperature). While I’d never heard of Duux before getting one last year, I genuinely don’t know what I’d do without it now. It’s such a useful heater to have on hand – not only if your boiler packs in, but also if you just need to give your rooms a quick heat boost this winter. Granted, it uses a bit of energy – Duux estimates on its average setting it’s using 1300W per hour – but for a quick 15-minute room blast every now and then, it’s not going to wreak too much havoc on your monthly bills. And while it’s not what I’d deem a bargain at £119.99, in my eyes it’s definitely worth the money. I’ve certainly got my use out of it (and I’m sure that’ll continue in the coming months).Related...This Eco-Friendly Smart Heater Can Slash Your Heating Bill ― And Doesn't Need Expert Installation11 M&S Autumn Buys That Look Designer But Cost Under £907 Boring (But Smart) Buys To Keep You And Your Home Warm Right Now9 Boring (But Essential) Winter Buys That'll Make Parents Say 'I Need That!'
