'Nobody's Perfect': Iranian Ambassador Clashes With Laura Kuenssberg Over Tehran's Threat To UK
Iranian ambassador to the UK Seyed Ali Mousavi and Laura KuenssbergThe Iranian ambassador to the UK has dismissed claims that Tehran poses any threat to Britain. It comes after Donald Trump joined Israel in attacking the Middle East country and struck Iran’s three nuclear facilities overnight.   The US president said Iran needs to either start negotiating over its nuclear capabilities or the States would launch further strikes. The UK was not involved in these attacks but it was given advance notice, according to the cabinet minister Jonathan Reynolds. He also warned that Iranian nuclear developments would be a “direct threat to the United Kingdom”.But speaking on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the Iranian ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi played down the threat Iran might pose.Mousavi said worries that Iran is planning to make nuclear weapons are “politically motivated statements”.But Kuenssberg said the UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned Iran has not been transparent around its nuclear capabilities.“There is no misunderstanding of the evidence,” she said. “Why on earth does Iran require 60% enriched uranium if it has no interest in a nuclear weapon?“Any security expert will tell you that there is only one reason to have.”He claimed this level of enrichment had a range of uses, not just nuclear warheads.“The Iranian regime is already a grave danger to this country,” Kuenssberg hit back.“The director general of the MI5 for instance has said there have been more than 20 Iranian-backed plots, some of which sought to be lethal against people here in the UK.“Our home secretary [Yvette Cooper] has said that Iran is a national security threat.”Cooper said in May: “The Iranian regime poses an unacceptable threat to our domestic security which cannot continue.”But Mousavi said this was a “misunderstand and misinformation”.He said the three people arrested and accused of terrorist activities in the UK this year were released without charges. “Unfortunately the UK has not been updated,” he insisted, claiming Iran has a “very constructive and respectful diplomatic relationship with the UK”.Kuenssberg pointed out that same-sex relationships are illegal in Iran and the regime locks up women for not complying with its national dress code, while political critics are suppressed. She continued: “There is plenty of evidence of Iranian activities against this country, including going against journalists and their families. And you’re asking people to take your word from it rather than the director-general of MI5?”The ambassador just suggested the aggression from Israel and the US was more important than the human rights issues in Iran.“If you want to go to the human rights issues in the US and indeed your country, nobody’s perfect,” he said. “Now is the priority to address the action made by the Israeli regime and the American regime against the Iranian non-proliferation regime.”Iran has also criticised Britain for its response to the US strikes after Keir Starmer called for Iran to “return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis”.Iranian foreign minister Sayyid Abbas Araghchi wrote on X: “What conclusion would you draw?“To Britain and the EU High Rep, it is Iran which must ‘return’ to the table. But how can Iran return to something which it never left, let alone blew up?”Related...Jonathan Reynolds Confirms UK Was Not Involved In Trump's Strikes On IranWhy Trump's Decision To Bomb Iran Is A Personal Blow For Keir StarmerTrump Claims He Should've Received 5 Nobel Peace Prizes – Before Launching Strikes On Iran
