Oh Good – Apparently Hot Showers After A Flight Are A Terrible Idea

ShoweringSurely I can’t be the only one who finds the first shower after a sweaty, probably slightly grubby flight completely transformative? I enter the hotel tired, bedraggled, and likely a bit stinky and leave refreshed and ready to flop onto the bed.But according to Andy Ellis, shower specialist at Vidalux, I could be making a skin-damaging mistake. “A lot of us love taking a shower after a flight to help freshen up when we get back home, but those taking a hot shower could be doing more harm than good to their bodies,” he said. Here’s why:Hot showers after a flight can strip already-drier skinLow-humidity, recycled cabin air can wick the existing moisture from your skin.As a result, Ellis shared, “After a flight, our skin is already pretty dry and dehydrated.”So, “Taking a hot shower can worsen this feeling as the hot water will strip the body of its natural oils” – you might be left with the tight, uncomfortable feeling of under-hydrated skin for longer than you would otherwise. Additionally, swollen feet and ankles are relatively normal following a flight, mostly because you don’t get to move your legs much while on board. Ellis shared that this can be exacerbated by a steamy shower, too.“Hot water also causes our blood vessels to dilate, which can worsen existing swelling and blood circulation issues after flying,” he stated. So... should I just not shower after a flight?Thankfully, a post-deplane wash can still be alright – just not a really hot one.
