Patricia Routledge at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2008Dame Patricia Routledge, the award-winning British actor best known for her leading performance in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.On Friday morning, Dame Patricia’s spokesperson told the PA news agency: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love.“Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles.”Their statement added: “She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world.”Keeping Up Appearances fans will remember Dame Patricia for her work as the iconic comedy character Hyacinth Bucket, which she performed for five seasons between 1990 and 1995.Patricia Routledge and her co-star Clive Swift on the set of Keeping Up Appearances in 1993For her work in Keeping Up Appearances, Dame Patricia landed a British Comedy Award, as well as two TV Bafta nominations.Her other on-screen work included Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, Marjorie And Men, Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads series and the crime drama Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, which ran for four seasons in the late 1990s.Last year, she appeared in a series of BBC documentary shorts looking back at some of her most memorable roles, which marked her final on-screen credit.In addition to her work as a screen actor, Dame Patricia had a hugely successful career on the stage, winning a Tony Award in 1968 for her work in the Broadway musical Darling Of The Day.She was also a three-time Olivier nominee, winning in 1988 for her performance in the West End musical Candide.Dame Patricia Routledge in 2017 after her investiture as a dameHer final acting credit came in 2014, when she appeared in a revival of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband.In 2017, she received a damehood from the late Queen Elizabeth II for her services to charity and drama.
