A Putin ally called David Lammy "the English idiot"A top ally of Vladimir Putin has called David Lammy an “English idiot” while he threatens to seize British assets in Russia in a new rant on social media.It comes after Britain announced it was going to use frozen Russian assets as part of a £1 billion defence boost for Ukraine.Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president who now serves as a deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, regularly declares his disdain for Europe online.And, after that announcement, he clearly had the UK foreign secretary in his sights.Writing on Telegram, he warned British assets could be seized in retaliation for the new UK move.“British thieves transferred Russian money to neo-Nazis,” he claimed, alluding to the UK government. “Consequences? Britain committed an offence.”Medvedev warned Russia would take revenge – while also calling Lammy “the English idiot”.It’s not clear why the Putin ally went after the foreign secretary instead of defence secretary John Healey who actually declared the significant funding decision.Medvedev said Moscow would respond to “any illegal seizure of frozen Russian funds or profits” by seizing the “valuables of the British Crown,” including British property in Russia.He continued: “Given that the money cannot be recovered in court for obvious reasons, our country has only one way to return the valuables: return it in kind.”UK officials announced on Wednesday that they would use money raised from immobilised Russian wealth to enable “the delivery of hundreds of thousands of rounds of artillery ammunition, hundreds of air defence missiles, spare parts and new support contracts to help maintain and repair its equipment and vehicles”.The decision follows fresh delays to Donald Trump’s attempts to get Putin to the negotiating table for a peace deal.While the US president has been trying to get the Russian leader to hold a bilateral meeting with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Moscow keeps finding new ways to avoid any kind of direct conversation.But Russia, which is insisting on the full demilitarisation of Ukraine, announced only at the weekend that it already has plans for its autumn offensives – suggesting peace is still a long way off.
