Relief As Trump And Zelenskyy Avoid Repeat Of Previous Oval Office Meeting Disaster
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy smile during their meeting in the Oval Office.Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy tonight avoided a repeat of their disastrous Oval Office meeting earlier this year as the search for peace in Ukraine goes on.The two presidents laughed and joked as they took questions from the media ahead of talks with European leaders including prime minister Keir Starmer. It was all a far cry from six months ago, when Zelenskyy was ambushed by Trump and his deputy, JD Vance. There was no such ill-feeling on this occasion, with Trump saying the US was prepared to join European countries in providing security guarantees for Ukraine to stop Russia invading again once the war is over. The US president also said he was willing to attend “tri-lateral” talks with Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin to agree a peace deal.Trump said: “People are being killed and we want to stop that. So I would not say it’s the end of the road, no. I think we have a good chance of [ending the war].”However, splits between the American president and some European leaders over the best strategy for achieving peace became apparent in a separate White House meeting later. Both German chancellor Friedrich Merz and French president Emmanuel Macron insisted that a ceasefire in the war was needed before full peace talks could take place – something Trump ruled out at the weekend.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, from left, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finland's President Alexander Stubb, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Donald Trump, France's President Emmanuel Macron, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House. And there was confusion about whether or not Putin has agreed that European and American troops could be based in Ukraine to prevent future Russian aggression.Trump told the meeting of European leaders that the Russian president had made the concession during their own bilateral talks in Alaska last Friday. He said: “While difficult, peace is within reach. In a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine and this is one of the key points that we need to consider – who will do what.“I’m optimistic that collectively we can reach an agreement that will deter any future aggression against Ukraine.”But in a statement, the Russian foreign ministry said: “We reaffirm our repeatedly stated position on our categorical rejection of any scenarios that envisage the appearance in Ukraine of a military contingent with the participation of Nato countries.”In another major sticking point, Trump said the leaders would discuss the “possible exchanges of territory” between Russia and Ukraine – something which Zelesnkyy has previously ruled out.Related...Keir Starmer Splits With Donald Trump On Whether Ukraine Should Be Allowed To Join NatoTrump Piles Pressure On Zelenskyy To End The War Putin Started In Bizarre Truth Social RantVolodymyr Zelenskyy Delivers Blunt Message To Donald Trump After His Ukraine War U-Turn
