Robert De Niro Makes It Clear Why He Refuses To Stay Quiet About 'Bully' Donald Trump

Robert De Niro in Cannes earlier this weekRobert De Niro has made it clear he has no intention of staying quiet about his feelings towards Donald Trump.Throughout Trump’s political career, the two-time Oscar winner has been among his most vocal critics – even gaining direct responses from the man himself on occasion – evidenced most recently on the first night of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where De Niro used his acceptance speech at the opening ceremony to take aim at the US president.During a new interview with The Guardian, the Taxi Driver star once again took aim at Trump, stating: “We have to stop what’s going on, it’s insane. We can’t have apathy and silence. You have to speak up and risk being harassed.”On the subject of whether he worries about his safety due to his outspoken views on the current administration, he admitted: “You always think about it, of course.”“But I’m too old for all that,” De Niro added. “The man is a bully and you can’t let bullies win. If a bully comes for your lunch money on Monday, he’s going to ask for more on Tuesday. You have to stand up. And I wouldn’t want to look at myself if I didn’t.”President Donald Trump signs the guest book after touring the Abrahamic Family House, Friday, May 16, 2025, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. I see him sitting by when they [Trump and JD Vance] beat up Zelenskyy [the Ukrainian prime minister], after all the times that he has defended Ukraine in the past. And I think, what the hell does he tell his kids about that?”“It won’t be forgotten,” he insisted. “Historically, this will not be forgotten.”Speaking at Cannes earlier this week, De Niro said that people in the US are currently “fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted”.Branding Trump a “philistine”, he lamented: “This is unacceptable. All of these attacks are unacceptable. And this isn’t just an American problem, it’s a global one. Like a film, we can’t just all sit back and watch.“We have to act, and we have to act now.”READ MORE:Robert De Niro Kicks Off Cannes Film Festival With Blistering Speech About 'Philistine' TrumpRobert De Niro Shares 'Love And Support' For Daughter Airyn After She Came Out As Transgender'We Cut It': Graham Norton Reveals Why This Robert De Niro Anecdote Never Made It To Air
