Russell Brand Granted Bail After First Court Appearance Over Rape And Sexual Abuse Charges

Russell Brand outside Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday morningRussell Brand has been granted bail after being charged with sexual abuse and rape last month.Allegations of historic sexual misconduct against the comedian and actor were first made public in 2023, following a joint investigation between The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches,The Metropolitan Police subsequently launched their own investigation, resulting in Brand being charged last month.Having already denied the accusations levelled against him, Brand appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a short hearing on Friday morning, where he confirmed his name, date of birth, address and that he understood the conditions of his bail.Prior to this, Brand was pictured making his way into the courtroom wearing a loosely-buttoned navy shirt and jeans, flanked by police, security and photographers.Russell Brand on his way into court on FridayHe will next appear at the Old Bailey on Friday 30 May.Among Brand’s charges are one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault.These charges relate to four different woman, with the alleged incidents taking place between 1999 and 2005.One of Brand’s accusers alleges that she was raped by him in the Bournemouth area in 1999, and a second woman claims that he indecently assaulted her in 2001 in London.A third woman alleges that he orally raped and sexually assaulted her in 2004, also in London, while a fourth has accused him of multiple cases of sexual assault between 2004 and 2005.A police spokesperson said last month: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.”Brand first became a household name in the mid-2000s, thanks to his work as a stand-up comedian and the host of shows like Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Russell Brand’s Ponderland and the Brit Awards.He later became famous internationally when he hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009 and 2010, as well as appearing in film like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and its spin-off Get Him To The Greek.Since the allegations about him were first published two years ago, Brand has pivoted to becoming a YouTube personality, offering political commentary, including support for US leader Donald Trump, and recently converted to Christianity.READ MORE:Bear Grylls Responds To Controversy Over His Involvement In Russell Brand's BaptismBBC Pulls Select Russell Brand Content From iPlayer And Sounds ServicesKatharine McPhee Hits Out Over Reports Around 'Resurfaced' Clip Of Herself And Russell Brand
