Russia Warns UK Is Making 'A Mistake' With Cyber Defence Plans
Russian president Vladimir PutinRussia has warned the UK’s new developments into cyber warfare may trigger “unpredictable consequences” for the country. The government has just set out its plans to boost military spending in the upcoming years in its new Strategic Defence Review. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) will be putting an additional £1 billion into setting up a new cyber command which will be linked to the UK’s Armed Forces. The extra cash comes amid growing worries about Russian aggression towards Europe as Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine rumbles on.Defence secretary John Healey claimed over the weekend that Russia is attacking Britain in cyberspace every day, so the UK must act accordingly and “send a message to Moscow”.The Russian Embassy in the UK then responded by warning Britain against this “mistake”.In a statement on Telegram, it accused the UK of “rattling its cyber sabre” and of recruiting “hackers” into its armed forces. The UK has not actually openly called for hackers to join its troops. But the Embassy claimed: “In essence, this is an open admission of the militarisation of the information space with the evident focus on carrying out offensive operations against Russia.“In doing so, the British side has indirectly acknowledged its role in the digital aggression already being waged against our country – via the creation, training and sponsorship of groups such as the so-called ‘IT Army Of Ukraine’.”Moscow has long accused Ukraine’s allies in Europe of being in a “proxy” war with Russia because they supply Kyiv with money and weapons. The Embassy continued: “Such criminal associations may also be used by the West against other ‘uncooperative’ states.“The long-term costs of this provocative course do not seem to bother the UK authorities. Yet this is a mistake.“The offensive cyber potential being prepared by London for use against Russia is fraught with the risk of triggering a large-scale confrontation in the ICT domain which may lead to unpredictable consequences, including for the United Kingdom itself.”❗ The offensive cyber potential being prepared by London for use against Russia is fraught with the risk of triggering a large-scale confrontation in the ICT domain which may lead to unpredictable consequences, including for the United Kingdom itself.https://t.co/NnVHANCaTTpic.twitter.com/sRDXQVRdEO— Russian Embassy, UK (@RussianEmbassy) June 1, 2025Russia has issued several threats towards the UK – and its allies – ever since Britain stepped up to help Ukraine after Putin’s 2022 invasion.Since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January, his administration has attempted to broker a quick peace agreement between the two warring countries.Although the US has offered to end the war on terms favourable to Russia, Moscow keeps dragging its heels and has refused to commit to a 30-day ceasefire.Meanwhile, Ukraine stunned Russia at the weekend by launching its largest long-distance drone attack of the war yet, hitting at least 40 Russian warplanes across the country. Ukraine and Russia are set to have their second round of face-to-face peace discussions in Istanbul today, although there is not expected to be much significant progress.Related...UK To Build Up To 12 Nuclear Submarines As Threat From Russia GrowsRussia Tries To Downplay Trump's Claim Putin Has Gone 'Absolutely Crazy'Russia Appears To Praise Kemi Badenoch For Her Latest Comments About The War In Ukraine
