Sabrina Carpenter Hits Back At Critics Of Her Sexualised Performances And Lyrics
Sabrina CarpenterSabrina Carpenter is taking on some of the critics who’ve taken issue with her more sexual songs and performances. The chart-topping singer had an international breakthrough last year off the back of her hit album Short N’ Sweet, which spawned the UK number ones Espresso, Please Please Please and Taste. In the past year, Sabrina has become known for some of her more daring lyrics and on-stage moments, including on her recent world tour, where every night she mimicked a different sex position while performing album cut Juno.Earlier this year, she also sparked a flurry of Ofcom complaints with her opening performance at the Brit Awards, which saw her performing racy choreo in lingerie, before dropping to her knees in front of a winking backing dancer, who was dressed as a royal guard.Sabrina Carpenter on stage at the 2025 Brit AwardsSpeaking to Rolling Stone as part of a new wide-ranging interview, Sabrina admitted that she finds some of the criticism that’s been levelled at her “funny”.“They’re like, ‘All she does is sing about this’. But those are the songs that you’ve made popular,” she claimed.“Clearly you love sex. You’re obsessed with it. It’s in my show. There’s so many more moments than the Juno positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can’t control that.“If you come to the show, you’ll [also] hear the ballads, you’ll hear the more introspective numbers. I find irony and humour in all of that, because it seems to be a recurring theme. I’m not upset about it, other than I feel mad pressure to be funny sometimes.” She later added: “I don’t want to be pessimistic, but I truly feel like I’ve never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity. I’m not just talking about me. I’m talking about every female artist that is making art right now.” Rolling Stone ushers in the Summer of Sabrina with our new July-August 2025 cover ☀️@SabrinaAnnLynn is the joke-cracking, wildly ambitious pop superstar that we all need.
