Sarah Jessica Parker Takes On Carrie Bradshaw Haters: 'It's Interesting How We Judge Women'
Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in the new season of And Just Like ThatAnd Just Like That star Sarah Jessica Parker is jumping to the defence of her on-screen alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw. In recent years, Carrie has become something of a divisive figure online, after Sex And The City began reaching a new audience thanks to streaming.Recent critics have taken issue with Carrie over everything from her supposed self-centred tendencies (in her defence, the original show is literally told from her perspective) to her apparent closed-minded approach to sex despite writing about it for a living. Then, of course, there’s her affair with Mr Big while he was married and she was still in a relationship with on-off boyfriend Aidan – which continues to be controversial 25 years after it first aired.Chris Noth and Sarah Jessica Parker as Big and Carrie in the early years of Sex And The CityAhead of the return of spin-off series And Just Like That, HuffPost UK spoke to Sarah Jessica about some of the controversy surrounding her character.“I don’t know about the controversy – I don’t want to know about the controversy,” she responded, jokingly putting her fingers in her ears. The Emmy winner then said: “I don’t know probably as much as you’re alluding to [about those conversations]. I would simply say that smart people make bad decisions sometimes [and] are foolish in judgement.“I think, fundamentally, Carrie is an extraordinarily decent and good person – an extremely devoted friend, she’s generous of spirit and time, in all she has to offer.”She conceded that there may have been times when Carrie has “made mistakes” or “not been in mature in love”, but continued: “It’s always interesting to me that [this is] so condemned, but a male lead on a show can be a murderer, and people love him. And if a woman has an affair, or behaves poorly, or spends money foolishly […] there’s a kind of punitive response to it.”She added: “But I ultimately think that all those feelings are pretty fantastic. That kind of connection and those kinds of strong feelings, both positive and negative, are pretty wonderful. People are kind of captive in those moments to something, and I think that’s perfectly fine.“I just think, it’s just interesting, the ways in which we judge women, and not men.”Sarah Jessica Parker at the premiere of And Just Like That season three last monthEarlier this year, SJP’s co-star Kristin Davis revealed how the Hocus Pocus star had confided in her about what viewers were saying about Carrie online.“What is this thing where people don’t like Carrie? I mean, how could they not like Carrie?” Kristin recalled the lead actor telling her during an episode of her podcast Are You A Charlotte? in February.Read more of HuffPost UK’s interviews with And Just Like That stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Nicole Ari Parker here.MORE AND JUST LIKE THAT:'We've Got A Nice Groove': The And Just Like That Cast Look Ahead At What's To Come In Season 3Kristin Davis Admits 1 Thing She's 'So Scared' Of Before Every Season Of And Just Like ThatSarah Jessica Parker Opens Up About Deleted Sex And The City Scene That Could Have Been A Game-Changer For Carrie
