Savings Expert's 2-Word Tip For Buying Cheaper School Uniform
If your child has spare uniform left over from before the summer break (or perhaps you have some lying around that an older sibling’s outgrown), it might be worth digging it out for back-to-school week. That’s according to Zoe Morris, savings expert at VoucherCodes.co.uk, who has urged parents to “hold fire” before splurging on school uniform in the next week or so.Figures show the average cost of school uniform for children attending primary school is just over £340. This rises to £454 for parents kitting their kids out for secondary school, according to the BBC.“It’s easy to get caught up in the panic of a September reset – especially if you’re a parent,” said Morris.“But once term time begins again, so do the discounts, and holding off just a little longer can mean big savings.”The best time to buy school uniformJuly is the best time to buy new uniform, said Morris, but if you’ve left it until last minute then the savings pro suggested “it’s actually smarter to hold fire”.“If you can stretch last year’s shirts and jumpers for a few more weeks, you’ll benefit from the post-rush markdowns that tend to begin towards the end of September,” she explained.Likewise, it’s worth holding off on buying pens, pencil cases, lunchboxes and backpacks until later in the month, too.“September can bring major price cuts as retailers clear unsold back-to-school stock. In recent years, stores like Tesco, The Range, and Ryman have great clearance sales, perfect for stocking up for the rest of the academic year,” she added. And it’s not just school products that see prices drop in September, Morris said supermarkets often host “baby events” then too, meaning major discounts on nappies, wipes and nursery essentials. If you’re already thinking ahead to Christmas, September is also a good time to nab a deal (or two) on toys. “Tesco’s autumn sale tends to start mid-September, with up to 50% off brands like Peppa Pig, Hot Wheels, and Barbie, and runs through to November,” said the money-saving pro.“And Asda has a long-running mid-September tradition: its Big Toy Rollback which slashes prices by up to 50% on brands like LEGO, Fisher Price, Pokémon, and more.”More tips for cheaper school uniformSome local authorities provide discretionary grants for those struggling with school uniform costs. Individual schools, trusts or charities may also run their own schemes offering financial support, so it’s worth researching what help is available near you. There are also school uniform banks offering preloved items in some parts of the UK, while some schools sell secondhand clothing at the start of term (and throughout the year).Local charity shops (and Facebook Marketplace) might also have stock of local school uniform, so it’s certainly worth shopping around – especially if you’re after branded items that would set you back hundreds of pounds if you purchased them new.Related...This Is How The Cost Of School Uniforms Is Impacting ParentsOh Good – School Uniforms Are WAY Dirtier Than The Average Toilet SeatMeet The Mums Making School Uniforms Affordable For All
