Senior Tory Calls On Kemi Badenoch To Quit After Local Election Drubbing
Kemi Badenoch is under severe pressure.A senior Tory has become the first to break ranks and call for Kemi Badenoch to resign following the Tories’ drubbing in the local elections. The party lost 674 seats and control of all 15 councils that it ran in the leader’s first ballot box test. One of those was North Northamptonshire Council, where the Conservatives’ former leader, Jason Smithers, said it was time for Badenoch to go just six months after she succeeded Rishi Sunak. He told the BBC: “I am on a call next week with the leader of the Conservative Party and I will be putting it to her that she should be resigning.“She has not helped in these elections; she has not once come forward and helped at all.“I am in absolute fear the Conservative Party will implode unless we get a good Conservative who can rally the troops and bring us back to some type of party that is going to challenge.”A former Tory cabinet minister told HuffPost UK Badenoch has “got a year” to turn around her party’s fortunes or face being ousted. The leader is under severe pressure to stop the rise of Reform UK, which gained 677 council seats as it took control of 10 local authorities and won two mayoralties as well.Writing in the Telegraph, Reform leader Nigel Farage said: “The party that I lead is expanding. As we march on, the Conservatives are in retreat.
