'Silence Of America Only Encourages Putin,' Zelenskyy Claims In Attack On Trump Administration
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaks to the media during a briefing at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025.Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a rare attack on Donald Trump’s administration, claiming its “silence” is just “encouraging” Russia’s war on Ukraine. In a post on X, the Ukrainian president said Russia launched nearly 300 attack drones across more than 30 Ukrainian cities and villages – including the capital of Kyiv – in a “massive strike” targeting “ordinary” people. He then hit out at the US, which has been trying to navigate a quick resolution between both sides since Trump’s inauguration in January.Although the US is Kyiv’s ally, the American president has repeatedly suggested the war could end on Russia’s terms and hinted Ukraine might have to give up occupied land in the name of peace. So Zelenskyy said: “Silence of America, silence of others around the world only encourage [Vladimir] Putin.“Without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped. Sanctions will certainly help.“Determination matters now – the determination of the United States, of European countries, and of all those around the world who seek peace.“The world knows all the weaknesses of the Russian economy.“The war can be stopped, but only through the necessary force of pressure on Russia. Putin must be forced to think not about launching missiles, but about ending the war.” He added: “Each such terrorist Russian strike is a sufficient reason for new sanctions against Russia. Russia is dragging out this war and continues to kill every day.“The world may go on a weekend break, but the war continues, regardless of weekends and weekdays. This cannot be ignored.”His remarks come after Trump had a two-hour phone call with Putin this week, where he was expected to put the pressure on his Russian counterpart to go to the negotiating table by threatening sanctions. But it appears Putin made no concessions during their conversation and is still refusing a 30-day ceasefire. The president’s top diplomat Sergei Lavrov has also criticised Trump’s plan for the Vatican to hold peace talks, calling it an “inelegant” solution. Today, rescuers have been working in more than 30 Ukrainian cities and villages following Russia’s massive strike.
