Starmer Refuses To Say Trump Deserves Nobel Peace Prize For Efforts In Gaza
US President Donald Trump, left, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer look at each other as they shake hands during a press conference at Chequers near Aylesbury, England, Thursday Sept. 18, 2025Keir Starmer has refused to say if he thinks Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the conflict in Gaza. The US president has made it painfully clear that he wants to win the prestigious accolade since returning to office. While his efforts to end the Ukraine war have so far failed to bear any fruit, both Israel and Hamas have just agreed to the first stage of his peace plan to bring their conflict in Gaza to an end.So Channel 4′s Paul McNamara asked the prime minister at a press conference today in Mumbai if that merits giving Trump his sought-after award. The journalist said: “Yes or no: do you now think President Trump would be a deserved winner of the Nobel Peace Prize?”But Starmer sidestepped the question. “It’s a very significant step forward and it would not have happened without President Trump’s leadership on this,” the PM said.“I want to be really clear on that and I say that from the informed position of the UK having played a part behind the scenes with the US and the mediators.“What matters now is to press on and implement this.”He continued: “All parties need to implement and take forwards the commitments they have made to the next stage, that is hugely important, we will work with others to make sure that happens.”He said the current stage is “strongly welcomed” but everyone involved needs to make sure it moves onto the next phase, adding: “That matters to me more than anything else.” After the Labour government formally recognised a Palestine state, the US president admitted the Gaza war was one of the few areas of disagreement between himself and Starmer. His press secretary Karoline Leavitt even wrote it off as a “clumsy” move which would reward Hamas “at a time where Hamas is the true impediment to a ceasefire and to the release of all of the hostages.”Starmer also skirted around questions over former Labour prime minister Tony Blair’s potential role in the future of Gaza.Trump previously named Blair as one of 20-odd figures who would sit on a “Board of Peace” in Egypt, and oversee the governance of the Palestinian territory, if the US peace agreement gets over the line. But Blair is a controversial figure, having taken the UK into the Iraq war along with the States on the false belief that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.Asked about his predecessor’s involvement, Starmer said: “The first and most important thing today is the deal. Today is a real breakthrough, that’s why it’s important we recognise that and recognise the human impact that is going to have on those who will be most affected.”He added: “I’m less interested, to be frank, in discussions about personnel. What I am interested in is getting it implemented.”Related...Israel And Hamas Have Agreed To The First Stage Of Trump's Gaza Peace Plan.
