Stranger Things Bosses Tease 'Plan B' Song For Iconic Running Up That Hill Scene

Sadie Sink in character as Max in Stranger Things' fourth seasonStranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers have revealed there was another song they were toying with including in the show’s fourth season before settling on a certain Kate Bush classic.Back in 2022, the Netflix sci-fi drama sparked a resurgence in popularity for Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill when it was included in a key scene concerning Sadie Sink’s character, Max.In fact, the song even went on to reach number one in the charts almost 40 years on from its original release due to the boost in sales provided by Stranger Things.During a new interview with Attitude to promote the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer were asked if there were “any Plan B or C songs for the Kate Bush Running Up That Hill moment”.Kate Bush performing Running Up That Hill in 1985, the year the song was first releasedMatt then shared that he, his co-creator brother and their music supervisor Nora Felder each put together playlists of music they “thought Max would be listening to” in 1986, with Running Up That Hill coincidentally popping up on all three.“Running Up That Hill was the one song that I think they all had in common, which is how we ended up choosing that,” he explained.Co-creator Ross then admitted that there was “definitely a runner-up” that was in contention, but they wound up not going with that one as it had already been featured in the movie Lost In Translation.“Part of the challenge is you’re trying to find songs that you don’t associate with other major pop culture events,” Ross explained. “That was what was great about Running Up That Hill. It really just checked all those boxes.”View this post on InstagramHowever, Ross then confessed he couldn’t remember the song in question off the top of his head without “pulling up” the playlist he made for season four. Some of the 80s tunes featured on the Lost In Translation soundtrack included The Jesus And Mary Chain’s Just Like Honey and Roxy Music’s More Than This. Matt also revealed that he and Ross have been able to connect with Kate since Stranger Things led to a chart resurgence for her, which he described as “completely surreal”.“first, we were emailing with her a little bit,” he recalled. “She was super excited about it, obviously, and I love that, actually. She liked that it was on TikTok – I don’t think that she knew, really, what TikTok was, and, I mean, neither do I, frankly – but she liked that it had found this younger audience, and she liked how it was used in the show.“And then, we did get to meet her which is amazing because she’s kind of a little bit of a recluse, she doesn’t come out very often. So we were able to meet her and her son and she was exactly what you want Kate Bush to be, so that’s been one of the best moments we’ve had while making the show.”During a rare interview on Woman’s Hour in 2022, Kate enthused:  “I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this. It’s so exciting.“But it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world’s gone mad.”The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is being split into three parts, the first of which is due to begin streaming on Netflix in the early hours of Thursday morning.MORE STRANGER THINGS:Finn Wolfhard Weighs In On If There's A Future For Stranger Things Post-Season 5Winona Ryder 'Fought Hard' Over This 1 Aspect Of Her Stranger Things CharacterStranger Things Bosses Address Rumours Millie Bobby Brown Filed A Complaint About David Harbour
