'Such A Limp Statement': Naga Munchetty Savages Minister Over Crumbling Schools And Hospitals
Naga Munchetty and Catherine McKinnell on BBC Breakfast.Naga Munchetty savaged a government minister after she pleaded with the public to give Labour time to fix crumbling schools and hospitals.Catherine McKinnell told the BBC Breakfast host that she could not give a precise answer to when repairs to classrooms built using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) crumbly concrete would be completed. The education minister said the government was providing cash to her department and the NHS to improve the state of their buildings.“Both departments are working really hard on driving forward these improvements, but it will take time, I think, is the fundamental message,” she said.Munchetty then told her: “The fundamental message ‘it will take time’, I’m sorry, that’s such a limp statement.“Give people an idea. You say that things are getting fixed that need to be fixed. That’s not true. Things will still need to be fixed, won’t they, because there will still be crumbling buildings, there will still be RAAC in schools.“You’re saying you’ll put in new technology to help people to teach, but there are classrooms that can’t be taught in, there are operating theatres that can’t be used.”But McKinnell told her: “It takes time because you have to contract builders, it needs to be done in a commercial way in terms of cost effectiveness for the public purse, but also it has to be done well.“It can’t be done in a hurry and then have to be re-done again in two-to-three years time. There are cases that we’re dealing with of schools that were rebuilt by the last government that are literally falling down.”Related...'Best Out Of A Bad Lot': Naga Munchetty Questions Labour's New Deal With The US'Give Me A Number': Naga Munchetty Left Exasperated By Minister Over ImmigrationNaga Munchetty Cannot Hide Her Confusion Over Government's Takedown Of 'Sick Note Culture'
