Now, the Anyone But You star has spoken out about the controversy… by shutting down any questions about it.During an interview with Vanity Fair about her new movie, Christy, in which she depicts the legendary American boxer Christy Martin, the actor stated that she would not be commenting on the topic ahead of her public appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,” she told the magazine. “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”The American Eagle campaign controversy quickly made headline news this summer and was followed by reports claiming the White Lotus Star has been a registered Republican since last year, just months before Donald Trump returned to office for a second presidential term.When this was raised with the US president directly, he told reporters: “I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”Other critics felt the campaign messaging was a dangerous “sign of the times” and insensitive to the current political climate, which is witnessing a rise in far-right rhetoric across mainstream US politics.
