Aidan Turner at a Bafta event last yearPoldark star Aidan Turner has been announced as the latest cast member to join season three of The Diplomat.While details of Aidan’s mysterious role are currently being kept under wraps, Deadline has reported that the Rivals actor is set to feature in a recurring guest role for the political drama’s third outing.The casting news comes after The Handmaid’s Tale actor Bradley Whitford was also announced as a new addition to the season three cast in the role of Todd Penn, the husband of President Grace Penn, played by his former West Wing co-star Allison Janney.Aidan and Bradley will join returning series regulars Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi,Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh and Rory Kinnear.An official synopsis teases: “When we pick up for season three of The Diplomat, Kate has just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job.“But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. “Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn.”Keri Russell as Kate Wyler in The DiplomatSince his Poldark days, Aidan has appeared in shows like Leonardo, The Suspect and most recently, the comedy-drama series Rivals in the role of Declan O’Hara.Bradley, meanwhile, told Tudum that he was “thrilled” to hear creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn wanted him in the show.“I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too.
