The Last Of Us Season 2 Finale: Creators Weigh In On Cliffhanger Ending
Bella Ramsey in the final moments of The Last Of Us season twoThis article contains major spoilers for the season two finale of The Last Of Us.The team behind The Last Of Us have spoken out about the show’s most recent cliffhanger ending. On Sunday night, the award-winning drama’s second season came to an end with an action-packed finale that saw Abby and Ellie (played by Kaitlyn Dever and Bella Ramsey, respectively) finally coming face to face, culminating in a mysterious gunshot being fired. After that, the episode ended with a flashback to Abby’s character waking up in Seattle, suggesting that the third series would retell some of the events of season two from Kaitlyn’s character’s perspective, as was the case in the video game on which the hit show is based.Kaitlyn Dever as Abby in The Last Of UsExplaining the decision to end the show the way he did, co-creator Craig Mazin told Deadline: “What I want the audience to feel thematically at the end of the season is that they aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go. That there has always been a story that we’ve been telling about the good and bad of love, but we switch which side is good and bad sometimes.”He continued: “We understand that both Ellie and Abby are moving forward in trouble. They are in moral trouble, because their certainty is beginning to fail them, and we can see it here with Ellie, for sure, because faced with the consequences of the things she’s done and the people that didn’t deserve to die, she’s starting to feel maybe a swing of the pendulum.“We don’t know where these two are going to end, but what I would hope the audience feels is that they are not done. They are not done growing, or they are not done falling. We’ll have to wait and see which it is.”Co-creator Neil Druckmann also told Polygon that this cliffhanger “always felt like the natural end point for the season”.“We have to take risks as a television show, and HBO is to back us taking risks,” Craig agreed.“But then again, we just did kill Pedro Pascal. They understand that this show is going to be a different show every season, which is a sort of a tricky thing to do when you’re a hit show.“You keep asking people like, ‘I know you love this, we’re taking it away and giving you this now.’ And then, hopefully they go, ‘Oh, well, you know what, we actually really like this.’ ‘Oh, that’s nice. Now we’re giving you this now because that’s how the story works’.”A third season of The Last Of Us is already confirmed to be in the works, with Craig lifting the lid on his plans for the show past that point during an interview earlier this month.READ MORE:The Last Of Us Creator's Update On The Show's Future Is The Best News Fans Could Ask ForThe Last Of Us Season 2 Finale Confirms A Huge Missed OpportunityThe Last Of Us Star Names 1 Part Of Season 2 Sex Scene That Was Actually Her Idea
