The Penny Finally Drops For Trump As He Admits Putin 'May Not Want A Peace Deal'
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin shake hands during a joint press conference following their talks in Alaska.Donald Trump appears to have finally realised that Vladimir Putin may not want the Ukraine war to end after all.The US president conceded that it was “possible that he doesn’t want to make a deal”, just a day after saying the opposite to Emmanuel Macron.Trump was caught on a hot mic telling the French president: “I think he wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.”The exchange came after the US president held talks on ending the war, which began with Russia’s invasion in 2022, with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in the White House. But in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Trump acknowledged that Putin’s intentions may be less than sincere. He said: “I don’t think [reaching a peace deal] is going to be a problem, to be honest with you. I think Putin is tired of it. I think they’re all tired of it, but you never know.“We’re going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks ... It’s possible that he doesn’t want to make a deal.”Despite attending the “Pursuing Peace” summit alongside Trump in Alaska last Friday, Putin’s military have continued their ongoing bombardment of Ukraine.Ten people – including an 18-month-old girl – were killed in air strikes on Sunday, while the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk was targeted by Russian drones and missiles 24 hours later.Although Trump insisted his talks with Putin had gone well, they ended without the Russian president having made any major concessions towards ending the war.Instead, he has demanded Ukraine hand over vast areas of unoccupied land – something which has been rejected by Zelenskyy. In the same Fox News interview, Trump re-iterated his view that Ukraine cannot be allowed to join Nato – a stance which puts him at odds with Keir Starmer. He also ruled out sending any American troops to Ukraine to police any peace deal, insisting that would be for European countries to carry out.Meanwhile, the prime minister today co-chaired a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” group of nations which have pledged to provide military back-up to any peace deal to end the war.Related...British Voters Have Delivered A Damning Verdict On Donald Trump's Ability To End Ukraine War'The Opposite Of Peace': Putin Launches Air Strikes On Ukraine During Trump-Zelenskyy TalksEmmanuel Macron Reacts To Trump's Hot Mic Comment On Putin
