Marge Simpson depicted in heaven in The Simpsons' season 36 finaleIf you’ve not been keeping up with The Simpsons’ most recent seasons, you might have had a bit of a shock this week when you spotted headlines suggesting that the titular family’s matriarch Marge has been killed off.Last month, the 36th season of The Simpsons ended with an episode titled Estranger Things, which saw Bart and Lisa falling out of love with their cherished cartoon Itchy And Scratchy, and instead beginning to watch different shows separately on their respective tablets.A horrified Marge then fears this will lead to the pair drifting away from one another, triggering one of The Simpsons’ now-numerous flash-forward episodes, which looked ahead to how the brother-and-sister duo’s relationship drifted as adults after their mum’s death.Despite the episode now being around a month old, for some reason manyUKoutletsare only just picking up on the events of Estranger Things in the last few days, with Marge’s supposed “death” naturally being up front and centre in the headlines.So, if you’ve been a little alarmed to read about Marge’s passing, don’t worry –it’s not technically canon, as it happened many, many years in the future, and the character will be back in her rightful place when The Simpsons returns for its 37th season later this year.The Simpsons family as we know and love themThe season 36 finale ended with Marge looking down on her family, including her husband Homer, from heaven, where it was revealed she’s been hanging out with Ringo Starr, with whom diehard Simpsons fans will know the character has been besotted since she was a teenager.Over the years, The Simpsons has killed off several mainstream characters for a variety of reasons.In one episode early on in the run, Lisa loses her friend, the jazz musician Bleeding Gums Murphy, while another grief-centric episode included the death of Ned Flanders’ wife Maude.Since then, Springfield Elementary teacher Edna Krabappel has also been written out of the show after the real-life death of voice actor Marcia Wallace, while mobster “Fat Tony” was revealed to have died in the 2010 episode Donnie Fatso.
