Top Putin Ally Delivers Major Blow To Trump's Peace Efforts With Ukraine Admission
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman and the head of the United Russia party Dmitry Medvedev attends the Victory Day military parade in Moscow, Russia, Friday, May 9, 2025.A key ally to Vladimir Putin has admitted Russia will only accept a complete victory over Ukraine in a major blow to the US’s efforts to end the war.US president Donald Trump has been trying to fulfil his election campaign promise to end the Ukraine conflict ever since he returned to office in January.Although the war began when Russia invaded its European neighbour in a brutal land grab back in February 2022, Trump has – for the most part – insisted that the Russian president also wants peace. However, that claim was derailed by the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council on Tuesday.Dmitry Medvedev claimed Monday’s face-to-face talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials in Turkey – which Trump has been pushing for – were not intended to find a compromise.“The Istanbul talks are not for striking a compromise peace on someone else’s delusional terms but for ensuring our swift victory and the complete destruction of the neo-Nazi regime,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram. “That’s what the Russian Memorandum published yesterday is about.”The Putin ally was referring to a set of Russian demands which were presented to Ukraine during Monday’s negotiations.Russia already controls 18% of Ukraine’s land but Moscow demanded Kyiv hands over more territory, becomes a neutral country, accepts limits on the size of its army and holds new parliamentary and presidential elections.Ukraine and Russia spoke for just one hour in Istanbul but did agree to a prisoner-of-war swap and to exchange 12,000 dead soldiers. They were not able to reach an agreement on the 30-day ceasefire deal Ukraine has already accepted.Medvedev also appeared to threaten revenge on Ukraine after its surprise drone attacks against Russia’s strategic bomber bases at the weekend. He wrote: “Retribution is inevitable. Our Army is pushing forward and will continue to advance. Everything that needs to be blown up will be blown up and those who must be eliminated will be.”Related...Vladimir Putin Is Attacking The UK Every Day, Defence Secretary Warns'A Message To Moscow': Labour Says Defence Spending Boost Will Deter Vladimir Putin'We Aren't Going To Allow It': Trump Gives Putin 2 Weeks To Act On Ukraine War With Stern Warning
