Tories On Course To Lose 500 Seats In Local Election Humiliation
Voters across England will go to the polls on May 1.The Tories are on course to lose around 500 seats in next week’s local elections as Reform UK makes huge gains across the country, according to a Conservative polling expert. In a major blow for Kemi Badenoch, Lord Hayward said his party will lose control of the 16 councils they currently run in the areas where voters will go to the polls on May 1.The Tories will be left with just 400 councillors, well down on the 900 they won in 2021, the last time these seats were up for grabs.By contrast, the Conservative peer forecasts that Reform UK will gain around 450 seats, with most of them in so-called “Red Wall” seats in the Midlands and the North.Labour – who are defending around 300 seats – will be left with roughly the same number, Lord Hayward said. But that will still mean a disappointing night for Keir Starmer’s party, who will be unable to capitalise on the Tory collapse because of the surge in support for Reform.Lord Hayward said Labour will make “some gains from Conservatives”, but lose other to Reform, the Lib Dems and Greens and ail to take seats in Midlands and North they should have won.The Lib Dems, meanwhile, are expected to gain between 70 and 80 seats, while the Greens could see their number of councillors double to 80.Both parties are set to capitalise on Labour voters’ unhappiness over policies such as the cuts to international aid and benefits.Lord Hayward said it would be “a bad night for both the Conservatives in terms of heavy losses and Labour, who really should make gains from such a low level”.Among the councils which the Tories are set to lose control of are Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, North Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Cornwall.Labour, meanwhile, could “lose virtually all their seats on either Oxfordshire or Cambridgeshire councils”, the Tory peer said.Lord Hayward said: “England has now joined Scotland in multi-party politics. The prospects therefore of single party control in any county authority is limited.“The Conservatives will lose control of all the councils being contested which they currently hold. In some counties they may not be the second largest party.“In Doncaster, Labour currently hold 41 of 55 seats. On an awful night they will lose control. If they do so, it will be to Reform.”Related...'He Doesn't Have The Balls': Kemi Badenoch Hits Starmer With Low Blow Over Trans U-TurnAmol Rajan Left Bewildered By Kemi Badenoch's Approach To Leadership In Car Crash InterviewTory Splits Erupt Over Kemi Badneoch's Call For Council Coalitions With Reform UK
