Trade Unionist Delivers Scathing Takedown Of Labour: 'Desperate Disappointment Is An Understatement'
Mark Serwotka and Alex Davies-JonesA trade unionist slammed the Labour government on BBC Question Time last night, calling it as “desperate disappointment”.Mark Serwotka, who worked as the general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union for more than 20 years, called out the party for “abandoning its core principles and working class communities”.Speaking from the Welsh town of Llandudno, Serwotka said: “To say that this Labour government has been the most desperate disappointment and has let down its core communities in Wales and the UK is an understatement of the year.”That remark triggered a round of applause from the audience. He continued: “I remember when Tony Blair won the election and when we were unhappy that Tony Blair was moving into the centre, we could see that the Labour strategists took the view that our core voters had nowhere else to go and we can go as right-wing as we want.“But now they’re seeing that people do think they can go somewhere else. And tragically that is to Reform.”Nigel Farage’s right-wing party has soared in the polls over the last 11 months.According to YouGov’s latest survey, Reform UK has an eight point lead over Labour right now, shooting ahead on 29% compared to the government’s 21%.Serwotka said he had “no doubt” having that party in No.10 would “divisive and dangerous” – sparking another round of applause – but Serwotka noted that Reform is led by “clever politicians”.“People are so disillusioned with the centre ground of politics, Reform are surging in the polls,” he noted.“Apart from the fact that the Tories have collapsed, I think there’s another central reason. It’s Labour’s abandonment of its core principles and working class communities.”He also claimed that he did not believe Labour’s claim that the Tories left a £22bn black hole behind in the public finances. But he noted: “If you believe them [...] they had a decision to make on that day they found it. And the answer that they gave to that problem revealed everything you needed to know.”Serwotka said they could have implemented a wealth tax or a corporation tax, but ended up “attacking pensioners, attacking disabled people, they attacked parents who have more than two children”.Justice minister Alex Davies-Jones sat next to Serwotka on the panel and looked rather displeased throughout his speech.“We said it wasn’t going to be easy, repairing 14 years of decimation to our public services,” she said, but noted that she is “proud” of how Labour has delivered for Wales.Labour’s decision to strip more than 10 million pensioners of their winter fuel allowance, cut eligibility for disability benefits and keep the Tories’ two-child benefit cap in place have all sparked backlash among voters. After Reform said they would scrap the cap and bring back universal winter fuel payments, the government announced a U-turn on winter allowance and claimed it was looking into remedies to address child poverty.“To say that this Labour government has been the most desperate disappointment... is an understatement of the year”Trade unionist Mark Serwotka says Labour has abandoned its “core principles” and is leading the country towards a “divisive and dangerous” future#bbcqtpic.twitter.com/DtWgAWrtpP— BBC Question Time (@bbcquestiontime) June 5, 2025Related...Labour Win Crunch By-Election In Stunning UpsetLabour Attack 'Privately-Educated Stockbroker' Nigel Farage As War Of Words EruptsAngela Rayner Insists She 'Never' Wants To Be Labour Leader After Leaked Memo
