Trevor Phillips Gives Kemi Badenoch 1 Brutal Reality Check Over Tories' Popularity Right Now

Kemi Badenoch and Trevor PhillipsTrevor Phillips gave Kemi Badenoch a brutal reality check this morning over the Conservatives’ place in the polls.A YouGov survey found this week that Reform UK were in the lead on 29%, while Labour were on 22%, the Lib Dems were on 17% and the Tories trailed behind in fourth place, on 16%.It marked the Tories’ lowest ever vote share with the pollsters and the first time they have been in fourth place since June 2019 – just before Theresa May was replaced as leader by Boris Johnson.The shock result comes amid speculation that Tory backbenchers may be looking to oust Badenoch so they can bring back Johnson – meaning the party leader is facing intense pressure to turn the Conservatives’ fortunes around.On Sky News this morning, presenter Phillips put it to Badenoch: “You’re 12 points adrift of Reform in the polls.“There’s gossip among your backbenchers and local councillors.“Is it really annoying to you that people keep talking about the return of Boris Johnson?”She replied: “Do you know what Trevor, people always underestimate me, they have been underestimating me since I was 16 years old. “I came back to the UK with £100, my dad’s last £100, working at McDonald’s to look after myself. Look where I am now –”But Phillips cut in with a key reminder: “Twelve points adrift in the polls that’s where you are.”Badenoch quickly hit back: “No I’m leader of the Conservative Party after a historic defeat, and I’m going to take the right decisions to take us back.“I’m not going to announce a lot of polices to chase polls, like Nigel Farage is doing, things that are unaffordable like the two-child benefit cap.”But she added: “I do acknowledge people are angry, and that is why we need to rebuild trust with the public.”#TrevorPhillips: You're 12 points adrift of Reform in the polls & there's gossip amongst your back benchers...
