Trump And Putin Won't Attend Peace Talks With Zelenskyy In Turkey
US President Donald Trump, left, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Russian President Vladimir Putin Neither Donald Trump nor Vladimir Putin will be attending the peace talks over the Ukraine war in Istanbul today.Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew to Turkey precisely to discuss a solution to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but it appears he has been snubbed by Putin.Although the talks were the Russian president’s own suggestion, he has decided to send a delegation in his place. After the Kremlin released its list of attendees last night, a US official confirmed the American president would not be joining the talks either. It came after Trump, currently on a tour of the Middle East, hinted at the possibility on Monday, saying: “I was thinking about flying over.”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Putin had held a meeting to discuss the talks on Wednesday evening with the team of negotiators. The Russian president is sending foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, the director of the Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov and army chief Valery Gerasimov, among others. But Zelenskyy is unlikely to meet them directly and will probably engage with the team via a group of his own negotiators. He agreed to the meeting after Trump urged Ukraine to negotiate with Russia “immediately”.Zelenskyy, currently in Ankara, also promised to fly into Istanbul at a moment’s notice to meet with Putin if he turned up.He said: ’This is his war, so the negotiations should be with him.”But, after days of what he described as “strange silence” from the Kremlin about who would be attending the talks, Zelenskyy claimed: “If Putin does not arrive and play games, it is the final point that he does not want to end the war.”He added that if talks failed, he would expect “strong sanctions” from the US and the EU.Russian and Ukrainian negotiations have not held face-to-face talks since early 2022, while Putin and Zelenskyy have not met since December 2019.However, Nato chief Mark Rutte insisted he was “cautiously optimistic” for a breakthrough in the peace talks today.Speaking at separate talks in Turkey, he said: “It is now up to the Russians to make sure they take the next steps.”UK foreign secretary David Lammy said: “We come with one single message to stand by Ukraine and to ensure that we get a just and lasting, enduring peace.“And the readiness for that peace is demonstrated by President Zelensky being here in Turkey as well.“And of course, we watched closely as we head to these talks, noting the Russian low-level individuals who are coming to represent the Russian side.”Meanwhile, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said Trump is “open to virtually any mechanism that gets us to a just, enduring and lasting peace and that’s what he wants to see”.“He wants to end wars and that’s the hope with Russia and Ukraine. We’ll see what happens over the next couple of days in that regard, but we want to see progress made,” he added. The White House has been trying to broker peace talks between the warring countries since Trump’s inauguration.Several short-term ceasefires have failed and Putin has repeatedly refused to impose a 30-day truce despite growing pressure from Ukraine’s western allies.Moscow has also insisted the occupied Ukrainian land it currently holds must be recognised as formally part of Russia – which Kyiv has refused. Related...Zelenskyy Spells Out What Putin Must Do To Prove He Wants To End Ukraine WarPutin Minister Finds A New Culprit To Blame For Dragging Out Ukraine War – And It's Not RussiaIs This Really A Turning Point In The Ukraine War – Or Another Kremlin Ploy?
