Trump Boasts About 'Excellent' Phone Call With Putin After Securing Zero Ceasefire Guarantees

Donald Trump and Vladimir PutinDonald Trump bragged about his “excellent” phone call with Vladimir Putin last night despite securing zero guarantees from Russia about imposing a ceasefire in Ukraine. His Russian counterpart described their two-hour chat as “very meaningful and frank”, and promised to work with Kyiv on drafting a memorandum for future peace talks. But Putin refused to back the White House’s suggestion of a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, which was Trump’s main goal with the phone call.In fact, it seems very little has changed within Moscow after their conversation.Even so, writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent … Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War.”He suggested the Vatican could host future Russia-Ukraine negotiations, while also hinting that the States could withdraw from the so far unsuccessful peace process.Although Trump promised before his January inauguration that he would end the war in 24 hours, he suggested yesterday that a deal could only be handled by “warring parties” – and there is a point where he will “back away.”“I do have a certain [red] line. But I don’t want to say what that line is because it makes the negotiations even more difficult,” he told reporters. While the Trump White House has been aligning itself more with Putin’s goals than with Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s over the last five months, the US is a still key ally to Ukraine and the peace process. The threat of American sanctions has been seen as an essential lever to force Russia to the negotiation table. But Russia has repeatedly rejected extended ceasefire plans from the US, claiming Ukraine would use the time to rearm.Instead, Putin claimed Moscow would back a halt to hostilities, but suggested the “root causes” of the war needed to acknowledged, alluding to his baseless claim that Ukraine needs to “denazified” and therefore de-militarised.He also called for Ukraine to withdraw its troops from its five occupied territories. Zelenskyy quickly rejected Russia’s requests, saying: “No one will withdraw our troops from our territories”, and called for the States not to “distance itself” from the peace process. The end result of the US-Russia phone call seemed to fall short of even expectations from the White House. Before their conversation, vice president JD Vance told reporters that the White House knows there is an “impasse” in the war.“I think the president’s going to say to President Putin: ‘Look, are you serious? Are you real about this?’” He said: “I think honestly that President Putin, he doesn’t quite know how to get out of the war.”Related...Zelenskyy Spells Out What Putin Must Do To Prove He Wants To End Ukraine WarPutin Minister Finds A New Culprit To Blame For Dragging Out Ukraine War – And It's Not RussiaIs This Really A Turning Point In The Ukraine War – Or Another Kremlin Ploy?
