Trump Defends His AI Pope Image: 'The Catholics Loved It'

US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump brushed off the controversy around posting an AI-generated image of himself as the pope.An image of Trump in full papal regalia — white cassock, headpiece and gold crucifix — was posted online on Friday by the president and on official White House social media accounts.Catholic officials variously described the depiction as “deeply offensive,” “sad” and “unfortunate.”Trump had earlier joked that he’d “like to be pope” following Pope Francis’ death on April 21.When asked by a reporter Monday about Catholics who might be unhappy with the image, Trump shot back that it was the “fake news” who “can’t take a joke.”“The Catholics loved it,” he insisted. The president went on: “I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was AI, but I know nothing about it. I just saw it last evening. Actually, my wife thought it was cute.”Trump then mulled how the papacy might affect his marriage.“To the best of my knowledge, popes aren’t big on getting married,” he said with a grin to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was standing next to Trump for an event confirming the 2027 draft will take place in Washington, DC.When pressed on whether the White House posting an image of Trump as pope undermined its credibility, the president replied, “Give me a break.”Watch the exchange below:Reporter: Some Catholics are not happy about the image of you looking like the PopeTrump: You mean they can’t take a joke?
