Trump Says He Disagrees With Israel's Claim There Is 'No Starvation' In Gaza

(Christopher Furlong/Pool Photo via AP)Donald Trump has just revealed he disagrees with Israel on its claim that there is “no starvation” in Gaza. The US president’s claim, made during an impromptu press conference with UK prime minister Keir Starmer and his wife Victoria, is surprising because the States is Israel’s largest ally.It comes as concerns of famine in Gaza soar in the wake of Israel’s blockade of aid, which has been in place since March 2.Starmer himself has called the scenes in the Palestinian territory “appalling”, along with several of his European counterparts. But it is the US president who really has Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ear – meaning his words today could have a real impact on the war. When asked if he agreed with Netanyahu’s denial that there is any starvation in Gaza, Trump said: “I don’t know. I mean, based on television, I would say, not particularly because those children look very hungry.“But we’re giving a lot of money and a lot of food. And other nations are now stepping up. I know that this nation [the UK] is right here.”Starmer then cut in to say there is a “humanitarian crisis” in Gaza, noting: “Nobody wants to see that, and I think people in Britain are revolted at seeing what they’re seeing on their screen. So we’ve got to get to that ceasefire, and thank you, Mr President, for leading on that.”Starmer said more aid needs to get in before squeezing in some praise for the US, saying it has “done a lot on this”.Asked if Israel had done enough to prevent civilian deaths in Gaza, Trump said: “I think nobody’s done anything great over there – the whole place is a mess.”He said it was time for “food and safety right now”.Trump then moved onto the remaining hostages, and claimed an estimated 20 still being held by Hamas after the October 7 2023 massacre are unlikely to be freed.“Hamas did a horrible thing, they paid a big price,” he said, but warned “they won’t release [the captives], they’re like their shield.”The president claimed he has told Netanyahu “you’re going to have to now maybe do it a different way”.He added: “A ceasefire is possible. You have to end it.”His comments will please the critics who have been calling for Starmer to put pressure on Israel to end the war via their shared ally, Trump, who has often spoken highly of the UK prime minister.Related...Kemi Badenoch Says She Believes Israel Is Allowing Humanitarian Aid Into GazaIsrael Declares 'Tactical Pause' In Parts Of Gaza As International Unease Over Hunger GrowsIsraeli Spokesperson Accuses Nick Robinson Of Lying About Gaza In Furious Row Live On Air
