Trump Snubbed! Why The US President Won't Be Able To Address Parliament During State Visit
Donald Trump and the then-Prince of Wales during the US president's first state visit to the UK in 2019.Donald Trump is set to miss out on the honour of addressing Parliament when he visits the UK later this year – because MPs won’t be there. The US president has been given granted an unprecedented second state visit after his previous one in 2019. It is understood that it is due to take place in September. But it has now emerged that Trump will once again miss out on the chance to make an address to parliament. That is because the Commons will be in recess so that MPs can attend their party conferences.Lord Mandelson, the UK’s ambassador to Washington, confirmed Trump is set to miss out in an interview with the Sunday Times. He said: “I had assumed that at the time of the visit parliament won’t be sitting.”The move will be a relief to MPs and peers who demanded that Trump should not be allowed to address them.A letter sent to the speakers of both the Commons and the House of Lords was co-ordinated by Labour peer George Foulkes, who said it would be “an insult if he were allowed to do so”.The president was also denied the opportunity to address both houses of Parliament six years ago after he was blocked by then Commons speaker John Bercow.Addressing the Commons in 2017, Bercow said: “I would not wish to issue an invitation to President Trump to speak.“I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.”“An address by a foreign leader to both houses of Parliament is not an automatic right. It is an earned honour.”The latest snub is sure to anger the president, given his predecessors Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan all addressed Parliament during their own state visits.Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy – who Trump has criticised in the past – also address both houses of parliament in 2023, while French president Emmanuel Macron did so just last week.Related...Former UK Intelligence Chief Says Vladimir Putin Has 'Played Trump Like A Violin'Rosie O’Donnell Responded To Trump’s Citizenship Threat — And She Didn’t Hold BackEric Idle Was Asked What's Funny About Trump And His Answer Was No Laughing Matter
