Trump's Top Diplomat Accused Of Calling US Peace Plan For Ukraine 'Russia's Wish List'
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been accused of calling the US peace plan for Ukraine "Russia's wish list"Donald Trump’s top diplomat has been accused of calling the US’s plan for peace in Ukraine “Russia’s wish list”.The president unveiled a new 28-point framework to settle the long Russian invasion of Ukraine this week, but it has caused major controversy among European leaders.Ukraine and its allies fear the plan forces the invaded nation to capitulate to Vladimir Putin’s demands. While Trump insists this is not his “final offer”, he has only given Kyiv until Thursday to agree to the proposal – or face losing access to American intel and military support. This fear was amplified when American lawmakers claimed US secretary of state Marco Rubio admitted to them the agreement aligns with Russian goals for the region.A group of senators said Rubio told them the plan was “not the administration’s plan” but a “wish list of the Russians”.Republican senator Mike Rounds, from South Dakota, told a security conference on Saturday: “This administration was not responsible for this release in its current form.“They want to utilise it as a starting point.”He added: “It looked more like it was written in Russia to begin with.”Independent Maine senator Angus King said: “It rewards aggression. This is pure and simple. There’s no ethical, legal, moral, or political justification for Russia claiming eastern Ukraine.“The peace proposal was authored by the US. It is offered as a strong framework for ongoing negotiations It is based on input from the Russian side. But it is also based on previous and ongoing input from Ukraine.”A State Department spokesperson also said the senators’ account was “blatantly false”, and pointed to Rubio’s debunking of their claims online.Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is yet to reject the plan completely, but has said the “bloodshed must be stopped” while independent security advisers gather in Geneva to discuss the draft proposals.Vladimir Putin has already shown his support for the plan, saying it could “form the basis of a final peace settlement” if the US can get Ukraine and its European allies to agree.Related...Sky Presenter Corners Minister Over UK Involvement In Trump's Ukraine PlanPutin's Chilling Response To Trump Peace Plan Shows Why It Is Bad News For UkraineTrump's 'Meaningless' Ukraine Deal Stunned The West – But He May Have Had An Ulterior Motive
