Trump's Treasury Secretary Slams Putin With Unexpectedly Strong Language
President Donald Trump, right, and Russia's President Vladimir Putin depart at the conclusion of a joint press conference at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Friday, Aug. 15, 2025.Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary has just thrown some unexpected criticism at Vladimir Putin, accusing him of behaving in a “despicable manner”.Despite the US president’s ongoing push for a peace deal to end the Ukraine war, Russia has continued to hit its European neighbour with missiles and drones.Last week, a Russian strike on the capital killed at least 20 people, including four children. It came shortly after Trump hosted Putin in Alaska for a face-to-face talk about what it would take to end the three-year war in Ukraine. The US president came away with no concessions from Russia, only dropping his own demand for an immediate ceasefire.Even so, Trump told European allies in the White House that he still believed Putin would agree to a peace deal just for him – the US president has long boasted about the bond he has with his Russian counterpart.Europe and Ukraine have condemned Russia time and time again, but Trump has been echoing Kremlin talking points and falsely blaming Kyiv for starting the war.Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed at the weekend that it intended to continue its Ukraine offensives through the autumn.Asked about how the US might respond to these latest delays from Russia, Trump’s Treasury secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News on Monday: “I think everything’s on the table.“President Putin, since the historic meeting in Anchorage, since the phone call, when the European leaders and President Zelenskyy were at the White House the following Monday, has done the opposite of following through on what he indicated he wanted to do.“As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign.”He added: “So I think with President Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week.”Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose more severe sanctions on Russia unless Moscow takes significant steps towards ending the war. However, after almost eight months in office, the US president is yet to follow through on these threats – despite claiming he would be able to end the war in just 24 hours. Related...Russia Just Admitted Exactly What Everyone – But Trump – Already Knew About Putin's Ukraine PlansTrump Makes Rare Admission About Recent Russia-Ukraine Talks With PutinEuropean Leader Shares A Very Alarming Take On What Trump Really Means To Russia
