Tucker Carlson Boldly Claims The Murdoch Family Asked Him To Run Against Trump
US political commentator Tucker Carlson speaks during the last day of the 2024 Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 18, 2024. Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson has claimed that the Murdoch family asked him to run against Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Carlson said the prominent media family, which owns the news outlets Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, urged him to enter the presidential race after they had already fired him from his hosting role at Fox News, where he worked from 2009 to 2023. “The Murdochs really hate Trump,” Carlson told guest and former Fox News host Clayton Morris during Monday’s episode of his podcast, the Tucker Carlson Show.“I got fired in April of 2023. In May of 2023, they asked me to run for president against Trump and said they would back me.”Carlson then appeared to scoff over the family’s proposal, saying, “I’d never get elected. Plus, I like Trump.”The political commentator admitted that while he is “frustrated now” with the president, he still holds him in high regard. Earlier this month, he accused Trump of abandoning his “America First” philosophy by being “complicit” in Israel’s recent military strikes against Iran, and Carlson has privately complained about Trump in the past.Trump clapped back at Carlson’s criticism in an interview with The Atlantic, telling the outlet that he is the “one that decides” what the principle “America First” means because he was “the one that developed” it. (He was not.)Elsewhere in the episode, Carlson claimed that Lachlan Murdoch, the eldest son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, specifically encouraged him to run against Trump. “Lachlan Murdoch said, ‘You should run… we’ll back you, the whole thing,’” Carlson told Morris, alleging that the son of the media tycoon offered to support him through the major media properties owned by the Murdoch family. After Morris asked Carlson to confirm that the statement “came right from Lachlan,” Carlson, who said he was “still under contract” with Fox News at the time, clarified that he was asked after his show was cancelled.“I was still under contract, but they cancelled my show,” he added. Representatives for the Murdoch family did not immediately reply to HuffPost’s request for comment on Carlson’s claim.Watch a clip from the Tucker Carlson Show below.
