UK And EU 'Agree Deal' After Late-Night Talks Breakthrough

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and Keir Starmer.The UK and EU have agreed a new trade deal after a late-night “breakthrough” in crunch negotiations, HuffPost UK has learned.Talks on giving French fishermen more access to British waters, which had proven to be a last-minute stumbling block in the discussions, was finally reached on Sunday evening.It paves the way for Keir Starmer to unveil details of the agreement at a special summit in London later today.The government hopes the deal will remove trade barriers which have been in place as a result of the post-Brexit deal struck by Boris Johnson in 2020.One of the key aspects of the agreement is a youth mobility scheme, which will make it easier for 18-to-30-year-olds to travel between the UK and the bloc.British holidaymakers will also be able to use e-gates at European airports instead of having to queue for hours to get their passports stamped.An agreement over veterinary and food rules will also make trade between the UK and EU more easy in a move which Starmer and chancellor Rachel Reeves hope will boost economic growth and bring down prices in the shops.The prime minister has said the deal “will be good for our jobs, good for our bills and good for our borders”.But both Reform UK and the Tories have accused the government of “surrender”.Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said: “It sounds like we’re giving away our fishing quotas, becoming a rule-taker from Brussels once again and getting free movement by the back door.
