Victoria Beckham Opens Up For The First Time About Her History Of Eating Disorders
Victoria Beckham at the premiere of her new Netflix documentaryVictoria Beckham has spoken for the first time about her struggles with an eating disorder while in the public eye.The former Spice Girls star and fashion designer has long shut down any speculation that she has had issues with eating in the past, but spoke about the subject publicly for the first time in her new Netflix documentary, which premiered on Thursday.Speaking on camera, Victoria explained that after the birth of her eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham in the late 1990s, she faced a wave of media scrutiny over her appearance, and specifically her weight.“I was really, really young, and that hurts,” she recalled of that time. “I really started to doubt myself and not like myself, and because I let it affect me, I didn’t know what I saw when I looked in the mirror.”Victoria continued: “You lose all sense of reality. I’m just very critical of myself. I didn’t like what I saw.”As she faced more scrutiny from the press, Victoria said she wanted to take “control” of her weight, but shared: “I was controlling it in an incredibly unhealthy way.” She then disclosed: “When you have an eating disorder, you become very good at lying. I was never honest about it with my parents. I never talked about it publicly.“It really affects you that you’re being told you’re constantly not good enough. And that’s been with me my whole life.”Her husband David Beckham added of this time: “People felt that it was okay to criticise a woman for her weight, for what she’s doing, for what’s she’s wearing.“There were a lot of things happening in TV then that won’t happen now, that can’t happen now.”Back in 2022, Victoria reflected on this period in history during an interview with Vogue Australia, during which she recalled one instance when she was weighed on live TV by TFI Fridays host Chris Evans.“I went on a TV show with Chris Evans many years ago and I’d just had Brooklyn and lost a lot of weight after. It happened to my mum after her pregnancies. It doesn’t mean you have an eating disorder,” she insisted at the time.“And he made me stand on the scales to be weighed. Can you imagine doing that nowadays?”She added: “I’ve had ‘Porky Posh’, I’ve had ‘Skeletal Posh’. After I had Brooklyn, there was a picture pointing to every single part of my body where I had to focus on losing the weight from.”Victoria Beckham is streaming now on Netflix.Help and support:Beat: Adult Helpline: 0808 801 0677 and Youthline: 0808 801 0711, or email [email protected] (adults) [email protected] (youth support) Samaritans: Open 24 hours a day, on 116 123Mind: Open Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm on 0300 123 3393 READ MORE:Victoria Beckham Reacts To Husband David's Knighthood With Emotional MessageVictoria Beckham Is Left Swooning Over Husband David's Latest Steamy Instagram PostVictoria Beckham Stands By Debatable 'Working Class' Claim Despite Her Husband David's Doubts
