Victorious Labour Mayor Tells Keir Starmer To Start Listening To Voters As Reform Support Soars

Ros Jones speaks to the media after her narrow victory.A victorious Labour mayor has called on Keir Starmer to start listening to voters as support for Reform UK soars across the country.Ros Jones hit out at the prime ministers after defeating Nigel Farage’s party by just 698 votes to win the mayoral contest in the traditional Labour heartland of Doncaster.Earlier, Labour had clung on in North Tyneside after Karen Clark beat Reform’s John Falkenstein by just 444 votes.Reform UK also overturned a Labour majority of nearly 15,000 to win the Runcorn by-election and are also on course to gain hundreds of council seats across England.Speaking to the BBC shortly after her result was announced, Jones said the narrowness of her victory should be a wake up call for the prime minister. In particular, she said voters are angry at the government’s decision to scrap winter fuel payments for 10 million pensioners, put up National Insurance payments for employers and slash disability benefits. She said: “I think national government needs to look and see what people are saying.“I wrote [to Starmer] as soon as the winter fuel allowance was mooted and I said it was wrong.“The results tonight demonstrate that they need to be listening to the man, woman and businesses on the street and actually deliver for the people, with the people.“On two or three occasions I would say they haven’t actually realised because the people of Doncaster know how hard life can be and it’s about delivering for them, their children and their children’s children.”She added: “The working man and businesses want national government to listen to them properly and help drive this great country forward.“What I’m saying to Keir is this: he needs to listen and take action.“We’ve got drive places like Doncaster forward. Keir’s got to drive the country forward and actually deliver economic growth so all can prosper.Asked if he was doing that at the moment, Jones said: “We will wait and see. It is early days.”Related...Labour Narrowly Sees Off Reform UK Surge To Win Key Mayoral ElectionSavage Blow For Keir Starmer As Reform Stun Labour To Win Runcorn By-Election
