'Volodymyr, Can You Hit Moscow': Trump's Extraordinary Question During Zelenskyy Phone Call
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump talk as they attend the funeral of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on April 26.Donald Trump asked Volodymyr Zelenskyy if Ukraine could fire missiles deep into Russia if given more weapons to defend itself, it has been reported.According to the Financial Times, the US president asked his Ukrainian counterpart if he could “hit” Moscow and St Petersburg during a recent phone call.Zelenskyy is said to have replied: “Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.”Trump subsequently announced that America will sell Patriot missiles to the European Union, which will then be sent to Kyiv. The extraordinary exchange is further proof that the US president is running out of patience with Vladimir Putin, who he has accused of reneging on a deal to end Russia’s war with Ukraine on four occasions.Trump asked Zelenskyy: “Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow? . . . Can you hit St Petersburg too?”He is also reported to have asked whether the Ukrainian military can “make them feel the pain”.In an interview with the BBC, Trump said he was “disappointed but not done” with Putin, who he has given 50 days to agree a peace deal or face crippling 100% tariffs on Russian exports to America. He said: “I thought we had a deal done four times and then you go home and you see he just attacked a nursing home or something in Kyiv. I said what the hell was that all about?”Asked if he trusted Putin, the president replied: “I trust almost nobody, to be honest with you.“It’s not a question of that. It’s like I’m disappointed that this hasn’t been done.”When Putin first launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Trump called it “savvy” and “genius”.But his attitude towards the Russian president has steadily grown more hostile since the spring, when Moscow launched its deadliest strike on Ukraine since last summer. In a much-mocked moment, Trump wrote on social media: “Vladimir, STOP!”At the start of July, he spoke to Putin on the phone and said he was “disappointed” in the Russian leader and that he did not believe Moscow would end the war.And last week he said: “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth.”Sir Alex Younger, the former head of MI6, said last week that the Russian president had “played Donald Trump like a violin”.Related...Donald Trump Tells The BBC He Is 'Disappointed But Not Done' With Putin ...
