'We Need Her Back': Wes Streeting Calls For Angela Rayner To Return To Government

Angela Rayner resigned earlier this month.Wes Streeting has called for Angela Rayner to return to government, telling Labour’s annual conference: “We need her back.”The health secretary paid tribute to the former deputy prime minister during a barnstorming speech in which he also savaged Nigel Farage.Rayner resigned from the cabinet earlier month after she was found to have broken the ministerial code by not paying enough stamp duty when she bought a flat near Brighton.She also stood down as Labour’s deputy leader, and has not been seen at this week’s gathering in Liverpool.But in his keynote speech to the conference, Streeting drew loud applause by praising the contribution she had made to Labour’s first 14 months in power.Addressing the £500 million investment for the first ever “fair pay agreement” for care worker pay, he said: “There’s someone else who’s made a real difference too, who understands the struggle care workers face, because she was one.“She brought that experience to the cabinet table as the care worker who became our country’s deputy prime minister.“Angela Rayner, this achievement is yours. Thank you. And we want her back as well.”He added: “We’ll definitely make sure she sees that. We need her back.”His comments are a clear indication that Rayner will make a return to government sooner rather than later.Earlier in his speech, Streeting had launched a furious attack on Farage, who he labelled a “snake oil salesman”.He said the Reform UK leader wants to change the way the NHS is funded. Streeting said: “Farage wants to replace the NHS with an insurance system.“His vision for healthcare is a system that checks your pockets before your pulse and asks for your credit card before your care.“Well, it might be right for Mr Moneybags.
