'We're Shutting Down The Lab': Keir Starmer Says The UK's 'Open Borders Experiment' Is Over

Keir Starmer says net migration will come down under his government.Keir Starmer has said the UK’s “one nation experiment in open borders” is over as he vowed to slash immigration. The prime minister said the government was “shutting down the lab” and introducing tough new measures to reduce the numbers coming to Britain from overseas. He said that unless Labour acts, the UK risks becoming “an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together”.Starmer took aim at the last Tory government, under which net migration – the difference between the numbers coming to this country and leaving – reached nearly one million a year.He said: “A one nation experiment in open borders, conducted on a country that voted for control.“Well no more. Today this Labour government is shutting down the lab. The experiment is over. We will deliver what you asked for time and again, and we will take back control of our borders.”A White Paper being published this morning will set out the government’s plans, including moves to reduce the economy’s reliance on overseas workers to fill vancancies. The threshold for automatic settlement and citizenship for anyone living in the UK will be increased from the current rate of five years to 10 years, unless migrants can prove they have a real and lasting contribution to Britain.English language requirements will also be extended to all adults wishing to live and work in the UK.Individuals will have to prove they have a basic understanding of English so they can integrate in the community.Starmer said: “Let me put it this way, nations depend on rules, fair rules.“Sometimes they are written down, often they are not, but either way, they give shape to our values, guide us towards our rights, of course, but also our responsibilities, the obligations we owe to each other.“In a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that these rules become even more important without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together.”Related...Keir Starmer To Announce Plan To Overhaul Britain's 'Broken' Immigration System'You're Lying!'
