Wilfred Frost Fact-Checks Robert Jenrick In Painful On-Air Clash Over Tories' Winter Fuel Plan

Robert Jenrick and Wilfred Frost clashed on Sky NewsWilfred Frost repeatedly called out Tory frontbencher Robert Jenrick this morning for falsely saying his party has a clear policy on winter fuel payments. The spat came after prime minister Keir Starmer U-turned on Labour’s decision to cut the payments from 10 million pensioners following an angry backlash from voters and his own MPs.It is humiliating move for the prime minister, who had previously said the cuts were necessary to help fill a £22 billion “black hole” in the public finances left by the Conservatives. It was technically a win for the Tory opposition, who lobbied against the changes last year. But on Sky News this morning, presenter Frost pointed out to the shadow justice secretary that the Conservatives have not said what they would do about the payments if they were in government.Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has insisted she will not unveil large policy plans until 2027.So Frost said to Jenrick, with a smile: “As with so many areas, we do await your actual policy – which I know are taking a while to formulate.”Jenrick angrily hit back: “We do have a [winter fuel] policy, that’s not fair! We fought this.”“OK so what, does it go back to universal [payments]?” Frost asked. The shadow minister said: “Keir Starmer only said that he’s going to do a U-turn at prime minister’s questions, we haven’t even heard what his proposals are.”“So what’s your view?” Frost said. “Don’t push back on my criticism that your party hasn’t announced policies for however many months it’s been under your new leadership, and then not provide me [with] your policy.“What is your policy on this?”Jenrick replied: “You’re asking me to respond to something where Labour haven’t even said –”“You were in government for 14 years,” the presenter pointed out. “You know all the details about the winter fuel policies, you know the pluses, you know the minuses. What is your policy from here?”Jenrick said the Tories continue to oppose the changes the Labour Party made, so Frost asked: “What would you replace it with?”“We’ve opposed removing it! We voted against removing it!” Jenrick insisted.Asked again if that meant the Tories would make it a universal payment again, the shadow minister said: “We will have to wait and see what Keir Starmer brings forward.”“Fine,” Frost said, with his hands up. “So don’t criticise me for saying you don’t have your own policy yet.”Watch Wilfred Frost challenge Robert Jenrick on what the Tory policy is on winter fuel payments. 👍 pic.twitter.com/oLyvKrIHRJ— Haggis_UK 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 (@Haggis_UK) May 22, 2025Related...Starmer Says Tories Face 'Descent Into The Abyss' Over Attempts To Attack New EU DealHammer Blow For Kemi Badenoch As Shock Poll Puts Tories In Fourth Place'A Dead Party Walking': Starmer Savages The Tories In PMQs Clash With Badenoch
