You Bosses Reveal Alternative Season 5 Ending That Would Have Totally Changed The Finale
Penn Badgley as Joe in the final season of YouThis article contains spoilers for the final season of You.The final season of You has divided both fans and critics right down the middle. One particular sticking point seems to be the final showdown between Penn Badgley’s character, Joe Goldberg, and newcomer Bronte, played by Madeline Brewer. In one of the show’s final scenes, Joe turns the tables on the audience, before being shot by Bronte (right in the crotch, no less) and accosted by the police for his many crimes. However, it turns out that things almost ended in an even more dramatic way.Showrunner Justin Lo told the New York Post: “We went through many different options, one of which being that he did die at the hands of Bronte.“I was even remembering a version where he was shot. And [the audience] didn’t realise that he [got] shot until the very last episode, and then he realises he’s a ghost.”Co-showrunner Michael Foley added: “Throughout the series, there was a shared belief among the writers and the creators that Joe wouldn’t get away with his crimes.“We came into the season knowing that we didn’t want to redeem him, that he would get his comeuppance, that he was going to face some of those whose lives he ruined. And most importantly, we knew he was going to be made to face himself.”Earlier this month, Penn shared his take on why he thought that Joe’s fate was a fitting end to the story.“What is best, not just for Joe, but the person who then has to do it?” he questioned. “If somebody was to kill him – and it would be a woman, right – well then actually now what you’ve burdened her with is having committed murder, like that’s not just, I don’t think.“Torture? Uh OK, same thing. Prison? Eh, feels a bit not enough. So what do you do? Take. His. Balls.”All five seasons of You are now streaming on Netflix.MORE YOU:Thought The Stars Of You Season 5 Looked Familiar?
